CAN to AWOL soldiers: No hiding place up here
Well joining the military, specifically the US military, is in fact NOT a play thing and is not just a thing to be a part of if it’s primarily to pay for college or get focused in life. And it isn’t the place to go if you’re truly concerned about being sent on “immoral and illegal” missions…, missions like say the invasion and occupation of Iraq by the US government.
It’s a shame because a lot of black people in the US will either have to become knowingly immoral and knowingly do illegal things; they’ll have to become even more wilfully ignorant (or try to pretend to be) as they seek benefits to improve themselves in life, or they’ll have to create other chanels for self-improvement, education and giving back to society. Choices, choices!
And today, the Canadian Supreme Court told military persons who have a war-time conversion to things moral and legal that they cannot legally stay in Canada. I don’t agree with the reasoning for the decisions against the AWOL solders, but the terrible international military-corporate complex has successfully persuaded the courts; helping them to see the light.
But even more, who’s telling the truth?
Canadian immigration officials said that no more than 40 refugee claims have been filed by American soldiers. House, however, said the number is significantly higher, noting that he has handled 45 to 50 claims himself. Based on the number of inquiries he has received from AWOL U.S. soldiers, he estimates there are about 300 American military deserters living in Canada, adding that many of them entered the country after serving combat tours in Iraq.
