People making cookies and food out of dirt in order to stay alive? Isn’t that out of a horror fiction? Well, here’s the horror (Haiti’s poor resort to eating mud as prices rise) but it’s unacceptably real. That’s right. While no one is looking completely unacceptable and intollerable things are happening.
UPDATE - Jan 31, 2008
Ok, here’s the deal with Haiti. There are some relief agencies trying to supply food and clean water but there’s no waste management in the poor country. So here’s how it goes:
1 - Haiti is mountainous
2 - No proper waste management
3 - Polluted land, inland waters and ocean
4 - No effective agriculture
5 - No knowledge/skill/equipment for deep water fishing
Note: Fishermen from the US, Dominican Republic and other countries
exploit the catch in Haiti’s deeper waters. The food does not go to feed Haitians.
Past and current hostile U.S. foreign policies against Haiti (and likely toward other countries which would have a positive policy toward Haiti) have helped create the extreme, unacceptable and intollerable condition.
A multi-pronged solution will be to:
1 - Create knowledge/skill/equipment among Haitians for deeper water fishing.
2 - The UN or some entity has to be made to get involved (if not already) in creating some types of humanitarian fishing sanctuaries and/or catch requirements in the deeper waters.
3 - Create proper waste management and enviro-clean-up.
