Seems that Keith Boykin wrote part of the article/blog-entry that I don’t have time to write — Black Gay Renaissance. Despite the big named celebrities at Keith’s dinner. This renaissance has been going on for a little bit now. It’s going on down your street, at that little fledgling community center across town, at your friend’s house, or with that hook-up/friend-benefit who was about more than just what you did. Truth!

Keith probably doesn’t get to see all this “great awakening” happening among us little people who never make it to the news or as a moc presidential candidate on a cable TV show, but we’ve been getting busy down here. Yea, we’re doing it pretty much backs against the wall out of necessity. But still it’s good for us.

Now don’t sit around like knots on logs to be entertained (disgusting!) or spoon-fed. Get you up, you be out and do your thing even too right where you are! You can do this even if it’s just watching another brother’s back so he can do his thing for himself, you and this brotherhood and sisterhood community we’re building.

A casual night out in Los Angeles turned into an event Saturday with the simple act of black men coming together for a meal. In the course of the evening, I realized there’s something dramatic going on in our community. It’s a cultural awakening, a rebirth of consciousness. Black gays and lesbians are standing up, speaking out and creating our own identities and culture. In film, literature, television, art and politics, we’re experiencing an explosion of new images, ideas, art and activism. Whether or not we realize it, a black gay renaissance is underway.
