This has turned into an interesting week for this back-woods and marshy metropolis. An oxymoron? That’s Seattle. But as of today, the entire state is involved.
First, on Sunday, our long-suffering Seattle Seahawks won not just a playoff game, but the highest rank in its conference, and with it won a chance to play in the Superbowl. Amazing! None of our teams in this modern era (1970’s don’t count) win anything big. Not this big!
Second, after a Seattle-style city council selection process to fill a vacant seat, the winner tuned out to be the candidate with a steller background and is openly lesbian.
And to cap it off, TODAY, after DECADES of passionate hearings, votes, partial political wins and losses; both the House and the Senate of the Washington State Legislature passed House Bill 2661. HB 2661 will add the status of gays and lesbians to that of other lifestyle issues such as marrital status and religion for protection from discrimination in employment and housing. How basically fair can you get? And we have a governor who plans to sign it into law.
Some say that an initiative to the voters might be coming. But right now, it’s time to pause and celebrate.
FINALLY it’s happened for us.
