‘Police’ raids close Kenya paper

Staff say they were beaten and forced to lie on the floor
Masked gunmen believed to be police have stormed one of Kenya’s major media groups, disabling printing presses and shutting its TV station.
They burned thousands of copies of the Standard, Kenya’s oldest newspaper, during the raid in the early hours.

The information minister denied any knowledge of the raids. An opposition leader called it a “dark day”.

Three Standard journalists are still being held without charge following a story about President Mwai Kibaki.

Both the president and senior opposition figure Kalonzo Musyoka deny a report in the Standard last week that they had been holding secret meetings.

The BBC’s Karen Allen in Nairobi says although the government says it does not know who was behind the raids, they are being seen as an indicator of growing political tension in an administration facing charges of corruption.
